World Food Day
Heather Morgan wrote “Every time you eat or drink, you are either feeding disease or fighting it”. Today, the 16th of October marks another World Food Day. On this day in the year 1945, the Food and Agriculture Organisation was established. The United Nations launched it also in the same year. This year’s theme for the World Food Day is “Our Actions Are Our Future. Healthy Diets for A #ZeroHunger World”. Food is a very important part of our existence, what we eat determines the quality of life we live.
With the new age of technology and innovation, we live in a fast paced world. Everything is basically on the go; our meals, shopping, cooking and eating even. This way of living sidelines our traditional way of meal preparation. Times where products are freshly bought from traders who gets their merchandise straight from the farm are replaced with counter, processed foods. Street and packaged processed food instead of home cooked meals. Ordered lunch and consumption right on our desks instead of taking a walk up and down the street to eat and clock in a little exercise. All these habits encourages sedentary lifestyles and an unhealthy diet. According to FAO, 670 million adults and 120 million girls and boys of the age group 5 to 18 years are obese and 40 million children under 5 are overweight. Around 820 million people suffer from hunger still.
Although some progress has been made there is a lot room for improvement. Like we always say here, there is a task for every one! No effort made is too little or too much, start clocking in right where you are. We need each other and together our little drops of water will make a mighty ocean. You can be the one to encourage your colleagues to take a walk down to the canteen. Ditch the canned foods and opt for home-cooked meals from the scratch. Add an extra portion for that neighbor who doesn’t have. Donate funds to that organization feeding communities. Eat vegetables and fruits; they are delicious too. Encourage farmers by investing or purchasing their products. Educate people on imbibing healthy eating habits. May this World Food Day spur you on to making healthy decisions and remember this year’s theme, “Our Actions Are Our Future. Healthy Diets for A #ZeroHunger World”. Happy World Food Day!!! Share a healthy plate of food with someone today!
We all need to step up, eat right to live well.
Absolutely true! we will do our best and help others in the process
