World Day for Safety and Health at work!
A good part of the adult life is spent in a workplace. The 28th of April a day dedicated to Safety and Health at work makes now a beautiful time to remind us of its importance in our individual lives.
In 1984, a pesticide plant in Bhopal, India, malfunctioned and caused a mass death of approximately 8000 human lives. A report stated that the chemical plant was in extremely poor condition and had broken dozens of safety regulations years before the accident.
Four years ago, a worker installing a robot at Volkswagen (VW) production plant in Germany was killed when it grabbed and crushed him against a metal plate. According to VW spokesman, initial conclusions indicate human error was to blame.
The Flixborough disaster was an explosion of a chemical plant close to the village of Flixborough in England on a Saturday. Twenty-eight (28) people killed and thirty-six (36) seriously injured out of the 72 people on site at the time of incidence. This disaster too was as a result of poor safety and health regulations at work.
This post is not to scare you, but create an awareness of the necessity of adhering to safety and health rules and regulations at work. When these rules are ignored or done poorly, lives are lost and people injured.
So, be it using your safety mask, checking the engines/machines at a specified period, or putting on your safety boots, washing hands at stipulated interval or a simple instruction as switching off all electrical appliances before leaving for the day, do it. You may just be saving yours and many lives literally.
Happy World Day for Safety and Health at work, be safe!
