International Youth Day
“Help our youth the truth to know, in love and honesty to grow and living just and true…”- culled from the second stanza of the Nigerian anthem. The young is the future of every nation, to avoid becoming an endangered nation, we all need to take conscious strides in teaching our youth the truth, in love and honesty. “Today, we celebrate the young people, youth-led organizations, Governments and others who are working to transform education and uplift young people everywhere.”- UN Secretary-General.
The UN General Assembly dedicated the 12 of August in 1999 as the designated date to celebrate the roles of young men and women as essentials to change. Also, to create an opportunity to raise awareness of challenges facing the world’s youth. The theme for this year’s celebration is; “Transforming education”. The goal here is to make education more inclusive and readily accessible for all youth. One of the key ingredients to achieving sustainable development is inclusive and accessible education. The need for education cannot be overemphasized, considering it is necessary in speeding-up progress across all spheres of life. Currently, 1.8 billion young people exists in our world and over half of this population lack basic reading and mathematical skills.
Quality education plays a crucial role in youth development and this also benefits the society greatly. Our goal is to help in shedding more light on this issue and enlightening you with hopes that each one of us will come on board to ensure quality education for all. Demand more from the teachers and government, pay extra attention to your child/ward learning abilities, employ the right persons equipped to execute the role. Organize learning dates, volunteer in local schools, donate books, sponsor potential teachers…there are many roles with your name, find it and give it your best. This is our future and we cannot “dilly-dally” about it any longer. Happy International Youth Day!!!
