International Day of Families
The 15th of May every year since the year 1993, marks the celebration of International Day of Families. The United Nation’s theme for this year is; “Families in Development: Copenhagen & Beijing+25”. Families being the basic unit of society is also recognized as a key role in development in general. As a result, this unit is deserving of comprehensive protection and support. According to the UN, families should be strengthened, with attention to the rights, capabilities and responsibilities of its members. The World Summit for Social Development in its Copenhagen Declaration recognizes the role of families in development. The Copenhagen declaration says; “The goals and objectives of social development require continuous efforts to reduce and eliminate major sources of social distress and instability for the family and the society.”
The 2020 celebration of the International Day of Families is to remind us that the goals of Copenhagen are still relevant in our rapidly changing world. Also, this day serves as a means to attract the attention of policy makers to develop policies that will create a nurturing environment at the family level for children and women. Beyond the Government and UN plans, there is something each one of us as members of a family unit can contribute to the development and proper function of our families. Our families are basically the firsts of everything in our lives. It is our responsibilities to have the right attitude towards members of our families. The most nurturing members are our parents, grandparents and siblings. Regardless of their own troubles, they are always there and you too have a role to play. Obey, love, respect and honor them, be considerate and appreciative of every effort made no matter how little it may appear.
Here are some activities you can do with your family on this day; you can play board games and card games as a family. Have a family picnic and bond over homemade meals and games. You can do some gardening if you have one or just clean the home thoroughly together while singing along with a music player. If you have young kids; you can draw and color together, cook and make desserts together. We hope you enjoy this day with your family and be reminded of how much good you have in your life because of them. We uplift you and your family in the light of goodness and send our love, your way! Have a very Happy International Day of Families!
