International Day of Charity
On the 5th of September 2012, the UN General Assembly officially declared the day as the International Day of Charity. It has been celebrated annually every 5th of September from there on out. 5th of September being the selected date also commemorates the anniversary of the passing away of Mother Theresa. We are all familiar with the life she lived; you were either called the name or you addressed someone with it at one point of your existence. She dedicated her life to alleviating poverty and suffering amongst the less privilege. This is basically the UN General Assembly goals in adopting the 2030 Agenda on Sustainable Development in September 2015.
Today is a good day in our Nation to raise awareness towards solidarity, social responsibility, institutional support for charitable causes and contributions from every individual regardless of how little it may appear. This day encourages us to stand united and combat our common enemy; poverty and suffering, not ourselves. We are aware of the present happenings in our Nation, we would love to remind you with this words of wisdom. “Do not repay anyone evil for evil, carefully consider what is right in the eyes of everybody”. Protest in peace, let your voices be heard; but do it peacefully and say “NO” to all forms of violence.
Our hopes is that, this day will fill your hearts with love for one and all. We will stop to take a second look at a suffering neighbor and extend a hand in kindness towards them. We will look beyond general statistics and see a precious human being in need. Always remember, you can be of help right where you are. No help is too little; it could be saying a prayer, buying a textbook, sitting through homework, singing to that crying babe…the list is inexhaustible. May this day fill your heart afresh with a new drive towards charitable causes, Happy International Day of Charity!
