Hugging Day!
This is one very strange international day, but indeed necessary! Hugging Day or International day of hug, is credited to Kevin Zaborney who created the day in 1986. According to Kevin, this day came to be as a result of the society’s attitude in regards to public show of affectionate feelings towards each other. Many are embarrassed while some simple take pride in appearing to be strong. The date also is strategic, January comes in between the Christmas holiday and Valentine day. These two dates are one of the most celebrated dates in the calendar year. On the other hand, mid-January is simultaneous to gloom.
After painting the town and home red, many have their bank accounts in the same shade; after-all “Tis’ the season to be jolly!”. Then comes January; fill with resolutions, goals, bills and little left to cover necessary expenses. Gloom settles in with many in low spirit…but, this is where this day comes out to play! You may not be able to pay off one’s debt, bills or help accomplish their set goals, but you can offer a hug!
It is in our culture to shy away from public display of affection and emotions, but you can change the narrative. To quote Alvin Toffler; “The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn and relearn.” Aside comfort, hugging has been proven to offer benefits such as an increase in levels of oxytocin and reduced blood pressure. Regardless of our culture, we are still humans…we all experience low days and high days. We all search for human connections; to be loved, seen, understood and cherished. In celebration of this unique day, we urge you to be vulnerable enough. Be quick to hug, look someone in the eye and offer a smile. It may be just what that person needed to snap out of their low state, live and dream again. Here is the amazing part; it is absolutely free! We have a little favor to ask of you; please, hug someone for at least 21 seconds for the next 21 days! Have a happy, happy “Hugging Day!”
